East Coast Dogwoods on the West Coast

Spring has sprung at Wildwood Nursery!

The real eye catchers now are the dogwoods.  The east coast dogwood [Cornus florida] is at its peak for blooms! Cloud 9, a white selection, and Cherokee Brave, a pink selection, are covered in blooms all around the nursery.

The dogwood section seems to expand this time of year as we move dogwoods so people can enjoy their full magnificence.  There are groupings of dogwoods at every twist and turn of the paths at Wildwood.

This is one of the few times where the West Coast is ahead of the East Coast  It will probably be at least another four weeks before those folks can even think about a dogwood bloom!

Pruning For Spring Blooms

Occasionally, Studio Wildwood branches out beyond pruning Japanese Maples.

Four weeks ago, the challenge was two crabapple trees.  Like flowering cherries and plums, these trees can send out loooong young shoots.  These branches can quickly make the tree look very congested.  This can look odd, at best, after the cloak of flowers falls to the ground.

We cut about 50% of the branches off the crabapples in the picture.  That sounds like a lot, and it is, but the improvement is more subtle.  The trees still have a mass of flowers only with slightly more depth.  Now, sunlight can illuminate all the flowers!

New Plants Available Online

As the Japanese Maples leaf out, we're adding them to Wildwood Nursery's online store.

The two latest additions are Rhode Island Red and Ryusen.  Rhode Island Red is a new dwarf introduction.  The red color really packs a wallop!  The foliage is so bushy and dense on these three foot plants.  Need red?  Add a Rhode Island Red.  Ryusen is pendulous maple that has large seedling like leaves!  While lace leafs look delicate, Ryusen looks strong and powerful.  Have a narrow space?  Add a Ryusen.

This is the tip of the iceberg.  Look for maples like Aratama and dogwoods like Venus soon.

SEO This

The single most important thing about running a retail business may be Search Engine Optimization.

While we are surrounded by fresh leaves unfurling on plants like A.c. Carnival and A.p. Wilson's Pink Dwarf  at Wildwood Nursery, what matters is keywords.  What are people thinking about when they picture a Japanese maple?  Is it fall color, lacy leafs, young spring foliage?  Or are they googling 'Red Japanese Maple'?

Well, we did our best to guess.  Whether you want a maple in Mercer Island, WA, a dogwood in Washington DC or a dwarf Ginkgo in Del Mar, CA, Wildwood Nursery should be at the top of the list.  If we aren't, please excuse us - we're a bit distracted by the beauty around us.
